  10.  AB    OBJECTIVES: The community response to HIV and AIDS in developing
  11.        countries plays a critical role in alleviating the social, psychological
  12.        and financial consequences of the disease on individuals, their
  13.        partners, friends and families. The Social and Behavioural Studies and
  14.        Support Unit of WHO/GPA has recently initiated a major two year research
  15.        programme to examine patterns of household and community responses in
  16.        developing country sites with a view to identifying the determinants of
  17.        different kinds of response. METHODS: A variety of qualitative research
  18.        techniques are being employed in the studies, including individual and
  19.        household interviews, focus groups and participant observation. In two
  20.        sites, India and Tanzania, an initial rapid assessment has been
  21.        completed utilizing these data collection methods. RESULTS: This
  22.        presentation reports on the form taken by both positive and negative
  23.        responses in each of the above locations. Positive responses include
  24.        those whereby education for prevention occurs, and whereby care and
  25.        support are offered to those infected. More negative responses include
  26.        stigmatization, ostracization, discrimination and vilification. The
  27.        contexts within which these different kinds of responses occur will be
  28.        described, along with an indication of their likely determinants. The
  29.        intervention implications of this research are highlighted with special
  30.        emphasis on health education, counselling, care and community support.
